Callan Solem

Callan Solem is one of the USA`s leading grand prix show jumping riders. She recently relocated to Chester Springs, PA to open Callan Solem Show Stables with equestrians, and native Philadelphians, Virginia and Collin McNeil. Solem, originally from Atlanta, GA, came to Chester County following her most successful HITS Ocala winter circuit ever. Riding longtime mounts Allison and Mianta, Solem achieved the Leading Grand Prix Rider Award following this winter`s Florida series, and her partner, Allison, won the Leading Mare Award after a string of victories and high placings.

The 31-year old rider has represented the United States Equestrian Team internationally on numerous occasions. She has ridden on four Nations Cup Teams, including competing in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Rotterdam, Holland; Lummen, Belgium; and Falsterbo, Sweden, and, in 2005, she was part of the winning Super League Team. While abroad, Solem also won the Derby qualifier in Falsterbo and took home top ribbons in Rotterdam and Lummen.

Solem was chosen to compete at these events after having an exemplary winter season with mounts Allison and Mianta. Her success in Europe proved Solem`s talent and determination. Competing in Europe requires riders to go outside their comfort zone, where it is crucial to produce results in an environment full of pressure.

Prior to relocating, Solem had been the professional rider at Quiet Winter Farm, Colt`s Neck, NJ, for former US Olympian Carol Thompson. Solem originally came to Quiet WInter as a junior student competing in the equitation division. In 1996 Thompson invited Solem to be a working student for the summer. Following a winter stint with Louise Serio at WEF in 1997, Solem was offered a full-time position as Quiet Winter Farm`s professional rider.

Over the past decade, she has won numerous grand prix classes at HITS Saugerties, HITS Ocala, the Fairfield Hunt Club and Old Salem Farm. Recent accomplishments also include earning the Leading International Rider title at the 2008 Syracuse Sport Horse Invitational/National Horse Show.

Callan is currently campaigning VDL Torlando, a 10-year old Royal Dutch Stallion and Magic Cruise, a 10-year old Selle Francais Mare among her many mounts.

In addition to her own riding, Solem trains equestrians of all ages in the disciplines of jumping, hunter riding, and equitation. Solem bases her training on effective theories of good riding, training, and horsemanship. She has a tremendous respect for the horse, and believes that when a horse is treated with understanding and good management, it is able to reach its true potential.
